7th Scansin (Scout Platoon) - Finished

"Sir the scouts report seeing enemy movement on the left flank. Initial reports estimate Platoon size force attempting to move up between us and the nineteenth."

"When was this reported?"  Col. Sunderland asked as he strolled through his command tent., "You der?" he asked of an Aide standing nearby. "never-mind,  You go and get dem horse jockey's on da Vox and tell'em to be 'lert. It appears the enemy believes we're not up tada task.  Oh, and let dem Lancers know that we got troopers out der, we don't want one of our own gettin skewered. "

Sgt. Harley has been with the Regiment since it's founding.  He's one of the few troopers who grew up in the so called "Back 40" on Scansin, and brought a wealth of knowledge with him. Currently he is part of the Scout Training team and responsible for passing a bit of that knowledge on to the new scouts.
Trooper Vernon is your standard scout trooper.  Not very social, a little bit introverted, and always on the sidelines where he can see what is going on. The scouts are the eye's and ear's of the Regiment, and should be able to hear and see all.

Trooper Basler is your typical "Cherry". He's just made it out of the annual Scout trials and is working hard to impress his Instructors. What he doesn't yet know is that before he is truly a part of the scout platoon he has to finish a 6 month probationary period.

Brevet Col. Sunderland - 7th Scansin

Brevet Col. Joesev Sunderland is one of the many "Highborn" officers serving throughout the Regiments founded by the planet Scansin. After completing his time in the Officer Training Battalion then 3rd Lieutenant Sunderland not only volunteered but fought his way off planet to join the ranks of the Imperial Guard.

After serving at Sector Command, Maj. Sunderland was offered the chance to take command of one of the companies in the newly formed 7th Scansin.  There was no hesitation on his part, as he felt that he would be able to bring his years of experience to the newly founded Regiment.  Little did he know that the original command staff of the 7th Scansin was much more interested in looking good, than they were in being effective.

Although he was not well respected in the officer ranks, Maj. Sunderland ensured that his company was well drilled in the art of war.  Years of experience had showed him the importance of drill and training, and he would be damned if his troopers couldn't fight for the Emperium. Following the disaster that was New Praxis, most of the officer billets in the 7th Scansin were open.  It was at this point that Marshal Argos, pulled strings to get Maj. Sunderland temporary Command of the 7th.

Once the 7th had been resupplied and was back up to combat strength, Marshal Argos once again ensured that the Regiment was assigned to BG82, and gave Maj. Sunderland a Brevet to Colonel.

Defense of Avenweddon: Operation Stonewall

After suffering heavy losses on the eastern flank by Battle Group 525 the 4224th Imperial Guard army called a halt prior to the coming of winter. The Lord General wanted to ensure that all three Battle Groups would be able to make the final push into the peninsula in the spring and bring the Defense of Avenweddon to a close.  This would free up at least two of the Groups for further action within the sub-sector.  As to which of the Battle Groups would have to remain on Avenweddon for the cleansing no decision has yet been made.

During the winter months the Army used the time to regroup, rearm, resupply.  The order of business was primarily on regrouping and strengthening of the forward lines. Many of the Regiments in the army were drawn from planets within the sub-sector and therefor were reinforced without having to requisition further Imperial assets.

With the Army returned to a fighting capability, and supply lines secure the Lord General is making plans to restart the offensive. Intelligence reports that the enemy hardly could have reinforced in this time as the Navel* blockade reported no enemy ships in the sector.  Even if that is so, it will still be a rough slog forward as they no have no doubt dug themselves in deeper than ever before.  For the elements of BG82 this shouldn't be a problem as the right flank is more flat leading out to sea.  As for the other two Battle Groups...  Only time will tell.

* Yes that should be Naval as Siph points out below.  But well, I made the mistake I have to live with the mistake.  And besides I think it's funny.

7th Scansin (Scout Platoon)

Every Infantry regiment founded on Scansin, has at least one Scout Platoon.  These troopers usually scout out ahead of the main formation and relay information back to Regimental Command.  Experts in the art of reconnaissance and stealth, these troopers work in small teams of 3 to 6.  Equipped with a light weight uniform, (lacking the built in armor) camo cloak, and various other tools of the trade many a foe has fallen to the skilled shot of a recon scout.

Due to their location, sometimes far ahead of the main body, they can also be employed as Snipers.  Because of this all troopers assigned to the Recon Platoon are required to be excellent marksman.  Those that can no longer keep up are sent back to a line Company.

Now I just have to finish up a few more of these and I'll have a Ratling Squad or two.

06 March 2016

Infantry, it's never enough.

And I finally finished up yet another squad.  Sgt. Burcham with  2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, 9th Company, 7th Scansin.   Only one more squad to go and I'll have 1st Platoon done.  Not to sure if I'll do up the entire 9th Company, as that would require me to paint up 9 more Infantry Squads and 4 more Command Squads.  And although I would love to do it, I'm not sure if I could get the requisition script signed by the "Major General".

I just like the way he came out so of course I had to put up a photo.  I really, really wish I knew where I got all the different heads for these guys.  I know they are a mix of Vic Mini's, Curious Constructs, and I believe Max Mini.  But which ones came from where....

7th Scansin Heavy Weapons

Here's the first finished heavy weapons teams for the 7th Scansin.  The weapons are just clipped in so that I can swap them out for Las-Cannons if need be.  In total I plan on doing up 2 more Teams, but those will be static Mortar teams and won't be able to swap the weapons.

These will be my counts as Heavy Bolters

The models themselves I purchased through a Kickstarter from Curious Constructs. They are now available for direct purchase from the web store as well, as I have picked up a few extra pieces for the ones that I have. As I mentioned in some earlier posts, the models were great, easy to prep, and a joy to paint.
And of course these are Auto Cannons.
Once I get a bit of time in between getting the Macharius done, I'll start work on the other weapons for these, along with the Mortar Teams.

* and I'll see ya in a week or so, I'm outta here for a week.

7th Scansin - Heavy Weapons

Well I've had these for a while now and just finally got around to start painting them up.  They're the Heavy Weapons from the first Kickstarter ran by Col. Gravis.  Unfortunately I didn't really take any pictures up until this point, but I'll see about making sure that I take pics as I do up the rest.

Right now I'm only going to paint what is going to count as the Heavy Bolter and the Assault Cannon.  The Lascannon is going to end up on a different base.  As for mortars those will be done up on stand alone bases, and the rest of the heavy weapons are going to be done so that I can swap them out on the carriages.

I also didn't as get as much done as I wanted because my daughter wanted to play Princess Castle with her Lego's so of course I had to get involved.  This was the result.

ToE 7th Scansin (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2, and a little bit of background on the 7th Scansin Regiment of Foot. The 7th Scansin is a pure Light Infantry Regiment, with absolutely no vehicles at all. Scansin is the 2nd most important Planet in the Vallivar Sub-System, but has only light manufacturing capabilities. Instead it provides almost 70% of the agricultural in the system. Imperial Guard Regiments from Scansin are most noticeable for the grey trousers and blue coats, which some say refer to the uniforms worn by workers in the planets Breweries (2nd largest export). Nonetheless, like all Regiments assigned to Battle Group 82, armor, artillery, and even transportation is provided by the Battle Group.

"Yes I like to make it hard on my Guardsman, all that walking keeps 'em fit and ready for battle.  We're the Imperial Guard! not some Regiment of Bureaucrats who need pampering."  - Marshal Argos, when asked why he's never requested a Transportation Regiment.

Platoon Command Team
This Regiment is broken up into 10 Companies of the line, and currently composed of 3 Infantry platoons of 3 squads.  Although Sector Command has deemed the Rgt. combat ready, it is currently only at 60% strength.  All heavy weapons are located at the Company HQ's and can be used to support the Infantry platoons as required. Where the 313th is typically used as shock force, striking deep behind enemy lines, the 7th Scansin is typically used in all scenarios where Infantry are required.

Defense of Avenweddon

Arial view of "East Ovis Orientalweide" prior to the Chaos Attacks.  Much of the city has already been destroyed by Chaos bombardments.

"We're still holding sir but it's not looking good. We've had to pull our forces out of the eastern part of the region.  The vile forces of Chaos are using some sort of heresy to block out the sun and wreck havoc on our instruments.  We can barely see the enemy, much less maneuver against him."  Col. Pallidar hoped that he was getting through to Battle Group command.  The atmospherics were only getting worse the closer the enemy came.

Turning away from the Vox, Marshal Argos could barely control his anger.  "Get me the senior representative from the AdMech and from the Ecclesiarchy.  One of them had better have a solution for this."  We need our sensor net we we're going to defeat these bastards.  "And get one of the Witches over here.  Maybe one of THEM can do something about this, if the others can't."  The battle had started early, but everything started out as planned.
Last view from Camera 34.259, before city goes black.
But somehow the sun never came up, shuddering Argos tried to push the thoughts from his mind.  "Marshal Argos, what is it that I may do for you?" Squeaked the Tech Magos as he came upon the battle plotter.

My Emperor, when will he get that speaker fixed, maybe someone needs to tell him.. thought Argos before replying.  "Well for one you can have someone check your voice box.  You're going to kill someone with that high pitched voice of yours.  And after that you can find a way to get our tactical sensor net back up and running.  Without it we're shooting in the dark.  I have 3 Regiments up there with untold PDF forces and they're all useless to me if they can't see the enemy or at least pass on targeting information for the artillery and Super Heavies."
Elements of the 7th Scansin move up with support from the 313th DTR.
"Sir, there's something going on." Shouted Sgt. Baker seconds before a bright light followed by a thunderous roar, knocked 3rd Squad and the Platoon HQ to the ground.  "They're behind us!!"  went up the cry all along the front.

Almost knocked to the ground Col. Pallidar quickly regains his senses when as realizes that the enemy is now behind them.   "Quickly men, defend the armor!"  He shouts, urging his command team and the troopers around him to get into a supporting position.  He knew already that it would be a lost fight, there was no way his troopers could stop the beasts falling upon them. They just need to slow them down long enough for the armor to pull out and Astartes to move up.

"Pick him up you fool, don't just stand there."  Yelled Lt. Albertson of the 7th Scansin.  "I don't give a damn if I'm not part of your Regiment, your Colonel needs your help!  And by the Emperor so long as I'm assigned to your Regiment as a Liaison you will do as I ordered!"   The fight hadn't lasted more than mere seconds before the entire squad was killed, thought Albertson.  Looking up at the medics carrying Col. Pallidar away, there was barely time to pull the Colonel out of there before those daemons charged right by us. Where were the Astartes?  Why didn't they move in to assist?

"Joe... Joe... JOE!!!!" screamed Private Smith, before giving up and just hitting him upside the head.  Ever since those tread heads moved up into a position behind them, they couldn't hear a damn thing.  Even the ringing has faded away to silence.

Last charge of Lt. Cropper
"Signals, relay the following:  All Imperial forces pull back to Objective line Delta.  I repeat, All Imperial forces pull back to Objective line Delta!"  He'd heard enough though, Argos sat back in his chair as his command tank began to move off.  This did not go as planned, but better to pull back now than to waste more material and men in lost cause.  The situation was not getting better, and without being to bring his big guns to bear it wasn't going to.  We need to find out what was causing the blackouts and comms issues.  We need to find a way to counter it. We can't let this happen again, or the planet may very well fall into the arch enemies hands.

I was actually supposed to post this up a month ago, but never got around to finishing it.  Hope ya'll enjoyed the read.

7th Scansin (1st section) Part 2.

And done, it only took 2 months longer than planed but the 1st Section is finally finished.  Now I just have to start and finish 2nd Section before the 23rd of November.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Walking the lines of Leman Russes, Marshal Argos appeared deep in though.  None of his staff or Regimental Commanders dared to interrupt him.  They new from experience that when he was ready he would begin.  Until then the talked softly among themselves, following the Marshals lead.   "Gentleman, as I'm sure you've noticed we have received new Orders.  started Marshal Argos I'll be going into details as soon as we start the operation planning.  Until then please make sure your Regiments are ready for deployment.  If your equipment isn't serviceable, fix it.  If you can get it fixed prior to deployment, leave it or destroy it in place.  If your troopers are sick, or injured they have until the "step off" to get healed.  After that they'll be left behind with the baggage train.

This is going to be a big one.  We'll need every lasgun we can muster if we're going to pull this off.  Make sure your troopers have their heads on straight, and their gear squared away.

Attend to your duties, my aides will call for you to attend the Op Meeting, once I've conferred with Field Headquarters.

7th Scansin "Sharpshooters" (Pt.2)

So I finally sat down and started painting up the first test mini for my Sharpshooters (Counts as Ratling), and successfully turned the above mini into this:

Now I like his head, and I think the colors are pretty close to what I want, but the uniform is just too dark. I wanted the uniform to be a lighter color green than the camo cloak, but the seemed to have almost blended into the same color.  Not sure what color I'll go with instead, but it's going to really have to be a lighter shade so that when I run a green wash over it, the colors don't darken to the point that they did this time.

Now the Camo cloak is much better, but still needs to be worked on a bit...  I thought I'd see how the blob scheme worked but have decided that it just isn't gonna cut it. Now I'm thinking more along the lines of this:
Picture found on the web, (I found it a while ago and saved it I don't know who owns it...)
It's the camo pattern worn by the US Marine Corps during ww2.  I don't want the pattern to be anything new / high-tech looking, it needs to match with the rest of the army.  So what do you guys think, shall I make the camo cloak as above, or with the larger camo patterns in it?

7th Scansin (1st Section)

Progress has been made! I've got the base colors down, and even knocked out the first layer of shading.  Skin tones are in and even the start of a few beards.  I really love the detail in the heads, the one's from Victoria Miniatures fit the best (the bodies are from there as well)  but those from Max Mini, (once trimmed) fit in just fine.

Since the last picture was taken I've done a bit of detailing, and the 2nd layer of shading.  More pics to follow at some point...

Oh, and as a parting gift here's a quick shot of what's going to be my 6 man squad of Sharpshooters (counts as squats).

Open projects

Here's just a few of my open projects, that I would like to see done before the end of the year.  I probably have a few more but this is more than enough to keep me busy (and some of these are already a year in the making...).  First up is my GK terminators.  I've had these guys since, well... to be honest I'm not even sure anymore.  Three of the 5 are 90% done, the other 2 need a bit more work.

Ah yes, the armor of the 73rd Fantoma Armored Regt.  Above is the new color scheme.  I only have 12 more tanks to re-paint like that and I'll be done.  Even with the airbrush that's gonna take a while.

The Imperial Navy Fleet assets of Vallivar Sub-sector.

Vengeance Class Grand Cruiser "Bringer of Truth" (90%)
Dictator Class Cruiser "Death Dealer " (done)
Gothic Class Cruiser "Integrity" (done)
Dauntless Class Light Cruiser "Redemptor" (0%)
Dauntless Class Light Cruiser "Relentless" (0%)
Falchion Class Escort "Fury Squadron" (0%)
Cobra Class Escort "Wraith Squadron" (0%)

I"m slowly making headway on these guys to.  I've decided to change a lot of the detailing, and started on the first squad.  There will be a separate dedicated post to these guys in the next few days.

Almost the same as above.  The last two are the projects that are sitting on my desk.  The others on the shelve right above my desk, and the projects that are on other shelves or boxes are not even listed.  Like above, I'll do a separate dedicated post to these guys in the next few days.

War of Avenweddon (Part 1)

+++DESTINATION: Vallivar Sub-Sector Imperial Field HQ
+++++++++++REF:  DJS-5548-163
+++++++SUBJECT: War of Avenweddon
------------------------------------------------------------------------

My esteemed colleagues, it is with my deepest regret that I inform you that the forces of Chaos have gained a foot hold on the planet Avenweddon.  The Imperial forces under command of the Wolf Lord CLASSIFIED were unable to hold back the forces of chaos as their reinforcements arrived in the city.  The Space Marine forces, though successful in holding two of the critical battlefield locations were unable to respond in time to keep the traitors from over running Fox Co. 313th, and the supporting PDF forces.

Guard all lined up, (and no that's not me)

Although extremely successful in the opening phases of battle, the crushing numbers of reinforcements brought in turned the tide.  After Marshal Argos was wounded and evacuated from the field of battle, the coordinated attacks against the traitor force's began to fall apart.

Following the detailed plans of Marshal Argos, we have assumed a cordon of defense trapping the traitors in the fallen city.  The artillery assigned to the 73rd Armored and PDF have assumed a 24/7 bombardment of the city, with support from the Legio Astramann.

A more detailed report, along with supporting documents will be forwarded for review as soon as Marshal Argos returns to duty.

i.O.  Colonel Pallidar

7th Scansin Regiment of Foot, a History of

Homeworld: Scansin, Segmentum Tempestus
Current Location: Vallivar Sub-System, Veiled Region, Segmentum Tempestus
Commander:  Brevet Colonel Sunderland

664M38
Grounding of the 7th Scansin Regiment of Foot. Unusual for this grounding is the core of veterans who form the command structure. After initial training7th Scansin first saw action while deployed to New Praxis. Unfortunately the Regiment suffered 60% casualties, too include many of their Company Command Staff's, and took up a roll as a roving garrison force for the front Regiments.

667M38
Reassigned to the Vallivar Sub-System Ready Reserve.  The 7th Scansin was first brought back up to strength with reinforcements from Scansin. Over the next 14 months its companies were temporarily assigned to different planets as support for local PDF.  This enabled the Regiments leadership to gain valuable experience while giving the Regiment as a whole the chance to regain it combat strength.

668M38
Permanently reassigned to Battle Group 82, the 7th Scansin has just recently transited  in system and is preparing for the defense of Avenweddon, which is under assault by combined forces of chaos.

IG Heavy Weapons. (from Curious Constructs)

Not sure if any of you have seen this, but these look awesome! Col. Gravis from Curious Constructs has been posting about these for a while now, and  I've been watching with interest because I think they'll look great as my heavy weapons assigned to the 7th Scansin.

Now there is a Kickstarter for these at the following link : "28mm steampunk inspired heavy weapons" and I can tell you now that I have already ordered some, and am looking forward to seeing these in real life.

Review: GW vs. Dystopian Legion

(Photo's are not by me*)
After my last post I was really looking around for more photo's of the new models from Spartan Games.  My thoughts were to use some as IG Veterans.  My hopes were dashed  though as I found this and other photo's showing the true scale of their models.

As you can see in the photo they are at least 2 heads taller than GW IG models...  Which would explain why the Drummer Boy (Musician) that I bought is almost the same size as GW mini's.

I guess I'll just have to keep looking.

Original Photo and more comparisons can be found here: AD Publishing

Review: Spartan Games "Dystopian Legions Drummer"

I recently pre-ordered the model above for use with my Imperial Guard detachment the "7th Scansin Regiment of Foot".  The company is Spartan Games, and it's from their Kingdom of Britannia line for Dystopian Legions.  Their website states that you get 2 Miniatures but never actually show you a picture of the 2nd Mini.   Naja, I thought it's either two of the same, or something close, and went ahead and ordered it. These came in yesterday and of course I just had to get it open and see how they looked.  Below is the back side of the box they came in.
Here's my first surprise, the second model comes with a field hat, and not even a Pith Helmet. My 2nd surprise is that the one model that comes with a Pith (the one I was really after) is bare footed...  :(  Now I'm stuck trying to decide what to do.  Either Green stuff a pair of boots (which I'm not good at), use the 2nd model, or I have to start cutting.

The miniatures themselves are very well done, but there was quite a bit of flash to clean up, which went pretty quick though.  Another thing that bothered me was that the slots in their bases is too small, and you have to trim down the piece below the mini to get t hem to fit.    The attention to detail is very good, and I was blown away and all the fine details when you look closer.  I'm really looking forward to getting these painted up.
Above is a picture showing the hight of the miniature next to Marshal Argos himself.  They pass quite together well I must say, although he could off been a tad smaller seeing that he's supposed to be a child.  All in all an Excellent Miniature and I'm already considering using some of their other Miniatures as Storm Troopers.
